WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS (BRING SNACKS)

• Paying every adult citizen $5,000 would cost about $1.2 trillion, more than the U.S. spends on Medicare, interest on the debt or defense in a year.
• The Tax Foundation estimates the government collected about $363 billion in tariffs from January 2025 through April 2026 — and much of that is being refunded to companies after the Supreme Court struck the tariffs down.
• The payment would need congressional approval. PolitiFact notes an earlier tariff-payout promise went unfulfilled.

WHY THIS MATTERS

$363 billion collected (and partly refunded) does not pay a $1.2 trillion bill. This is arithmetic, not politics.
