Record-low poverty — which measure?

WHEN & WHERE WAS IT SAID?

THE CLAIM (BRACE YOURSELF)
The poverty rate has just reached its lowest level

WHAT HE SAID (WORD FOR WORD, SADLY)

He said the poverty rate has just reached its lowest level. In the Gastonia speech he put it as "We lifted 1.5 million people out of poverty last year."

WHEN AND WHERE (THE RECEIPTS HAVE A CALENDAR)

The 1.5 million version was said at the Gastonia, North Carolina rally on Sept. 16, 2026, per PolitiFact. FactCheck.org examined the 'lowest level' wording in its October 2026 rally roundup.

WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS (BRING SNACKS)

  • Census data show 1.5 million fewer people were below the official poverty threshold in 2025 than in 2024.
  • The supplemental poverty measure, which accounts for regional cost of living and benefits, showed no significant drop over the same period.
  • PolitiFact rated the 1.5 million line accurate but needing context; FactCheck.org found the official rate reached a low while the supplemental measure did not.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Which ruler you pick decides the answer. He quoted the one that flatters.

THE FACTS (SORRY)

The official poverty rate reached a low in 2025, but the supplemental poverty measure did not.
