WHAT HE SAID (WORD FOR WORD, SADLY)
He said his administration was "destroying 97 percent of the drugs coming into the ocean and sea." The archive's wording is that the flow of deadly drugs coming in by ocean was brought down by 97%.
WHEN AND WHERE (THE RECEIPTS HAVE A CALENDAR)
Address to the UN General Assembly, Sept. 22, 2026, per PolitiFact. FactCheck.org examined the same claim in its October 2026 rally roundup.
WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS (BRING SNACKS)
- Seizures fell after the military boat strikes began in September 2025, but the administration has not shown a clear link between the strikes and the drop.
- The Coast Guard recorded a 200% increase in seizures in fiscal 2025 compared with other annual averages.
- Seizures measure what was stopped, not what was shipped or delivered. Because the trade is illegal, the true volume is unknowable, so a precise percentage cannot be supported. PolitiFact rated the claim False.
WHY THIS MATTERS
You cannot report a 97% drop in something nobody can measure. The percentage is the unsupported part.
There is no comprehensive measure of all drugs trafficked by sea, including shipments that were not seized.
