Were U.S. jobs numbers 'rigged'?
WHEN & WHERE WAS IT SAID?
When: Aug 1, 2025
Where: Post on Truth Social
Original context / reporting ↗The Bureau of Labor Statistics employment figures were phony or rigged
WHAT HE SAID (WORD FOR WORD, SADLY)
After a weak jobs report he accused the Bureau of Labor Statistics of producing manipulated numbers and fired its commissioner.
WHEN AND WHERE (THE RECEIPTS HAVE A CALENDAR)
Aug. 1, 2025, the day of the July jobs report, announced on his social media account. The commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, had been nominated by Biden and took office in January 2024; the deputy, William Wiatrowski, became acting director.
WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS (BRING SNACKS)
- The report showed 73,000 jobs added in July and unemployment up to 4.2% from 4.1%.
- It also revised May from 125,000 to 19,000 jobs and June from 147,000 to 14,000. Revisions of this kind are routine as more survey responses come in.
- Economists and investors have long treated U.S. economic statistics as free of partisan interference; FactCheck.org found no evidence of political manipulation. U.S. stock indexes fell about 1.5% that day.
WHY THIS MATTERS
When data disappoint, you can improve the economy or fire the thermometer. Only one is a documented option here.
No evidence of political manipulation was found; routine revisions are normal.
